Host Fiji earned the last men’s berth into the Hockey World League Round 2 after thrashing Vanuatu 17-2 in the final game of the three-team round robin tournament held in Suva, Fiji. There is also a women’s tournament being held this week in Fiji and the winner of that will become the final team to qualify for Round 2 of the World League.

It was clear from the first game that the host nation was the team to beat. Fiji easily topped Papua New Guinea, 7-0, in opening day action. The second day saw a thriller between eventual runner up Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu with Papua New Guinea coming out on top of a close 1-0 affair.

That game must have cost Vanuatu too much energy as Fiji decimated them on the last day of the men’s tournament, climbing out to an amazing 9-1 lead at the half and pouring in another eight goals in the second-half to bring the final to 17-2.

The Hockey World League Round 2 begins on January 21 when Cape Town, South Africa will host six women’s team in a Round Robin event. In total, there will be eight Round 2 tournaments, four women’s and four men’s. Each tournament will have a six-team round robin format. The dates and participating teams will be finalized shortly.
