England – Italy 3-2 (3-1 halftime)
Host England completed the Investec Hockey World League tournament semi-final quartet with a 3-2 victory against Italy. It was a David vs. Goliath meeting with the #4 ranked team, England, taking on the 17th-ranked Italians in the quarterfinal match-up.
Goliath drew first blood just three minutes into the game when Kate Walsh fed Alex Danson a perfect pass for the quick strike. But Italy was not to be intimidated. They immediately replied, first with a goal that was disallowed after a video referral and them immediately afterwards when Macarena Ronsisvilla scored on a rebound on a penalty corner to even the game at one.
Danson and Hannah Macleod ended the tense times with a one-two punch that saw England climb ahead 3-1 in under 90 seconds with two quick goals completely changing the tide of the game. The goals came with 10 minutes to go in the first half and left the Italians rattled as their prime position crumbled before their eyes.
Italy eventually recovered and took advantage of a penalty stroke in the 56th minute when Augustina di Bernardo converted the chance to pull the Italians to within one and once again put England on their toes. In the end, England was able to pass the surprising test and hung on for the 3-2 win.
England will take on Argentina in Saturday’s quarterfinal game in a meeting of the two highest-ranked teams at the event. The other quarterfinal game will feature Australia against China. The other four teams will meet to determine who will play for fifth and seventh place. Spain takes on USA and South Africa meets Italy in Saturday’s placement games.
